Crater still not filled-in six months on

crater.jpgA teacher has voiced concerns about a 2ft deep crater which she lay unrepaired in her West Molesey street for five months.

Carole Needham, of Upper Farm Road, rang Surrey County Council - which is responsible for highways - on October 24 to say nothing has been done since the hole was dug in May this year when lamposts were being replaced.

For five months she said it has been left unheeded, with only a temporary barrier put round to warn people of the dangers.

The married mother of one, who works at Chandlers Field School in West Molesey High Street, said: "I rang the other day and they said they had no record of it being done, which makes me lose faith with the council. We are a back road and always get left out and I would like the council to fix it and explain why it has taken so long."

Carole also said there are two lamposts that are not working, which she believes is adding to the danger of someone falling in.

She said: "This hole has no warning beacon and the two new lamp-posts are not lit as they have not been connected, meaning the area is pitch black. The hole also takes up most of the pavement which means that mothers with children in buggies cannot get past.

"There are a lot of elderly people and children on this road, and it is a matter of time before there is an accident."

She added that vans often park nearby meaning it is difficult for pedestrians to get past the hole.

She said: "It is right outside the house of an elderly gentleman so if he comes out in the early morning it is very difficult for him to get past. The other day I saw a woman walking by with her buggy and had to tilt it on her side."

Another Upper Farm Road resident, Pamela Reading, said: "It is potentially dangerous especially with a lot of young children and elderly people coming along the road. It is an accident waiting to happen."

Surrey County Councillor for West Molesey, Ernest Mallett, said a contract does not exist with EDF to fix lamposts, meaning it is difficult to attend to.

He also said he will pass on the details of the hole to a highway gang so they can fix it.
