A celebrity's worst nightmare
I visited Thorpe Park last week after being invited on a press trip by their publicity officers, and went with some of the other Herald journalists to try out the new 'Fright Night' mazes.
And I must say, I had a brilliant time, the rides were good, and we got given free nibbles and alcohol (which I didn't think was a very wise idea considering we were going to be shot around at 100mph).
But what struck me as strange was how the publicity team sold it to me as 'being a party for journalists and celebrities.'
First of all, why on earth do people have to refer to them as celebrities? Don't you think it's quite demeaning? Couldn't 'actors' suffice, or 'writers'.
The word 'Celebrities' brings up connotations of foul mouthed Big Brother types, or generally stupid fame-toting imbeciles.
But secondly, did these 'celebrities' know they were being invited to a party with journalists?
Considering a lot of the party goers were from tabloids and gossip magazines, wouldn't that be a 'celebrity's' worst nightmare?
If I were quiet respected TV actor, and suddenly found myself in a room full of story-hungry, immoral 'wolves' desperate to break the latest news on which style-toting celeb has just vomited at a late night party, I would be really scared.
But I guess these things happen, and anyway, nothing of particular interest happened - there was no drug snorting binges off tables, no swearing 'celebrities' punching a photographer in the face, and no scantily dressed ladies falling asleep at 3am in private taxis.
I guess it would have been quite interesting if that did happen come to think of it...
...and it might have made quite a good story.
